9 Things You Didn't Know About Folorunsho Alakija

One of the most powerful women in Africa and the richest woman in Nigeria, Mrs Folorunsho Alakija born on July 15 1951, is a renown businesswoman and an entrepreneur who has in no doubt manage to amass more wealth than most Nigerians could ever imagined most especially men, she was said to have made a lot of money from her investment in the oil and printing industries.

A quote from an American writer Jean Chatzky, in her book Women With Money said "It's not a big surprise that women mature earlier than men. As a result, they tend to deliver better judgment,  particularly when it comes to money." So is the way of Mrs Alakija as her quality judgement in investing in oil business in 1993 has given her a place among the top guns in Africa and beyond.

  • BORN TO A WEALTHY FAMILY: The phrase "From rags to riches", is not in her stead as she was born into the Ogbara family, which was an influential and a wealthy family from Ikorodu Lagos State. She's not one that lacks from childhood as she was said to have had her primary education abroad.
  • ORIGINALLY FROM A MUSLIM BACKGROUND: As many people knows she was a christian, but initially, she was born a muslim before she chose christianity while growing up. This as a decision she might not have found very easy to make regarding her parent's religion, but she had strongly chose to be a christian and had faithfully remain one up to date.
  • SHE NEVER ATTENDS A UNIVERSITY: She never had a university education, and this in no way has been a barrier to her as she is always proud she never attended one. In one of her speech at the University of Lagos in 2014, Folorunsho Alakija said, "I never went to a university and I am proud to say so because I don’t think I have done too badly…You do not need have to have a university education to be able to make it so count yourselves privileged to have that education as part of the feather in your cap.”
  • ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST POWERFUL WOMEN: Its more than just a feat to have been among the 100 most powerful women in the world, and the second most powerful woman in Africa after Ngozi Okonjo Iweala  by Forbes in May 2015. She ranks 87 in the world.
  • FASHION INFLUENCE: Folorunsho Alakija, to many made it through her investment in oil and printing businesses but she initially initiates herself as an entrepreneur through the establishment of her tailoring company called Supreme Stitches, which became famous within few years of establishment and later became Rose of Sharon House Of Fashion. She later became the president and a prominent trustee of the Fashion Designers Association Of Nigeria (FEDAN).
